The Green Green Gyms of Wales
The Welsh Assembly has been highlighting the fact that walking is a cheap and healthy way of combating the excesses of Christmas, but also warning people of the need to take care when out and about.
Wales is a veritable green gym with an abundance of hills, mountains and walks to suit all tastes & abilities, but over the years, inexperienced walkers have got into difficulties because they have left home without taking the necessary precautions.
And sadly occasionally resulting in tragedy.
Welsh Assembly Government Minister Alun Pugh, who is also a qualified mountain leader, has issued advice to individuals and families venturing out to the Welsh hills and mountains:
“I am passionate about the great Welsh outdoors and would like to see more people making full use of this natural resource in a sustainable way – and in safety.
We have superb forests with sophisticated mountain biking trails, some of the best rock climbing, especially in Snowdonia, and a superb network of walking trails, not to mention a coastline that is second to none”.
Before leaving the house walkers have to think realistically about the challenge no matter how tempting the scenery looks.
Everyone, from the casual stroller to the more experienced climber should observe some common sense safety tips at this time of year, when days are short, temperatures can plummet dramatically and the mist can descend on the hillside rapidly.
Make sure your clothing is suitable. Even for the shortest walk you should dress warmly and wear appropriate footwear.
Don’t get fooled by winter sun and idyllic landscapes.
At this time of year, climbing our highest peaks ca require winter mountaineering skills rather than simply a pair of boots and a waterproof jacket. “
And before leaving the house, remember to check the weather conditions.
The website (run by the Met Office) which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, has details of the weather conditions in the Snowdonia and Brecon Beacons National Parks, including wind speed, visibility and temperature.
The Welsh Assembly Government recognises the importance of the outdoors.
We have an outstanding green gym in Wales – and it’s all free! We want to increase the percentage of Welsh people using the Welsh natural environment for outdoor activities, from 36% to 60% - but only if used sensibly.”
The website has details of the weather conditions in the Snowdonia and Brecon Beacons National Parks, including wind speed, visibility and temperature and is available from 5.30 am every day.
The forecast is also available on notice-boards at key locations in the Snowdonia and Brecon Beacons National Parks.
