New Army Leadership School

Minister for the Armed Forces, Adam Ingram has announced that improvements in Army training will continue with the establishment in April 2007 of a new Army Training and Recruitment Staff Leadership School (ASLS) in Pirbright, Surrey.

Under current arrangements leadership training has been given at a series of targeted roadshows, and at dedicated sites at Litchfied and Catterick.

The new school will bring together a range of high quality training and expertise for the wide range of Army personnel who are involved in training.

Mr Ingram said:

"This new centre of excellence will provide the opportunity to share best practice - it is a tangible commitment to driving forward change in training methods throughout the Army.

We want to ensure that every recruit gets the best possible training and support from talented and professional leaders, and I know the new Leadership School will deliver high standards at every level".

The Army Training and Recruitment Agency (ATRA) is responsible for each stage of an officer cadet or recruit's progress from the recruiting office, through a Recruit Selection Centre, into recruit training, through specialist courses before they are finally posted to their regiment in the Field Army.

ATRA is responsible for an annual budget of between £600-700m, from which ATRA is required to enlist about 15,000 recruits and to train a total of about 100,000 officers and soldiers.

ATRA's operations are divided into four inter-related functions. Recruiting, Recruit training, Specialist training, and Career training:

·         Recruit Training, is the Initial training of recruits and officer cadets in military skills.

·         Specialist Training, is the Special to Arm training to prepare soldiers for their first appointment.

·         Career Training, is the Continuation training and professional development provided in order to enhance soldier's career progression and to meet the Army's need for specialists.

ATRA conducts almost 1,500 different types of courses, with over 6,000 actual courses run each year. There are an average of 12,000 officers and soldiers under training at any time.

With a staff of about 12,000, the Agency is also responsible for Ministry of Defence land, buildings and field assets valued at more than one and a quarter billion pounds.

Welcoming the announcement, The Director General of Army Training Major General Andrew Graham said:

"Our soldiers deserve the very best leadership. This new school will ensure that all our training and supervisory staff of every rank - from Lance Corporal through to Brigadier - continue to deliver world class quality training and support to recruits.

Training and support that begins from their very first day in the army right through to the moment they are deployed on operations across the globe."
