Without My Car Day

Commuters are being urged to leave the car at home on September 22 2005 to support In Town Without My Car Day, a Europe-wide initiative to encourage people to use more sustainable methods of transport.

This is the final event of European Mobility Week, which runs from Friday 16 September to Thursday, 22 September under the theme of "clever commuting" and encourages people to leave their cars at home and use cleaner forms of transport in order to reduce pollution in our towns and cities.

A number of local authorities across Wales are participating in European Mobility Week and have organised events to mark In Town Without My Car Day.

Those local authorities taking part include:

  • Newport,
  • Bridgend,
  • the Vale of Glamorgan,
  • Flintshire,
  • Carmarthenshire and
  • Pembrokeshire.

British Gas is also participating in the initiative for the first time by encouraging staff to use alternative modes of transport to get to work.

Arriva Trains Wales is offering customers two-for-one travel on services after 9.15am from 16-22 September.

Research by the Commission for Integrated Transport shows that about 45% of journeys are under two miles, and 35% of journeys under two miles are made by car.

    Andrew Davies said:
"The Welsh Assembly Government is keen to encourage people to use more sustainable forms of transport.

We have invested heavily in public transport services and infrastructure across Wales.

We have also have a number of strategies in place such as the Road Safety Strategy for Wales, a walking and cycling strategy as well as the safe routes to school scheme, to encourage people to use other forms of transport.

Using alternative means of transport other than the car means we can begin to reduce traffic congestion, air pollution and noise and make Wales a cleaner and healthier place to live."
