Lack of Settled Homes

The charity Homeless Link has welcomed the commitment in the new London Housing Strategy to tackle the long standing problem of lack of settled homes for thousands of homeless people in the capital's hostels.

The London Housing Strategy sets, as one of its goals, to reduce the number of people in hostels waiting to move on through provision of appropriate accommodation and support.

Jenny Edwards, Homeless Link Chief Executive, said:
"We are delighted that the London Housing Board has listened to our members and recognised the need for urgent action to resolve the wasteful silting up of hostels.

This will make a real difference to the lives of thousands of homeless people in the capital and will help us make further progress on tackling rough sleeping."

Homeless Link, the national umbrella organisation for the homelessness sector, had launched a report on the crisis in London's hostels last - December No room to move - and had contributed to the consultation on the draft strategy.

Several of the recommendations this report have been adopted into the final strategy.
