Charting the Future of Health Visiting

Health Visitors in England are having their say on the future of their profession which could impact on the future health of hundreds of thousands of families.

Unite/Community Practitioners’ and Health Visitors’ Association has organised a series of 13 road shows across England, so that members can give their views on the Department of Health’s Facing the Future – the government’s review of health visiting.

The roads shows kick off in Rochester on next Monday 20 August, followed by events in London, Norwich, Manchester, Esher (Surrey), Carlisle, Plymouth, Bristol,  Hampshire, Leicester and Birmingham, before ending in South Yorkshire on  11 September 2007.

Unite/CPHVA wants members’ views ‘to put the flesh on the bones’ of the review, which is taking place against a backdrop of a ‘health visitor a day’ being lost according to the latest NHS statistics and a 40% axing of training places for health visitors in England this year.

Unite/CPHVA Professional Officer Dave Munday, who is organising the road shows, said:

“This is a great opportunity for health visitors and community nursery nurses to influence our response to the review and demonstrate the vital role they play in such areas as parenting, child development and postnatal depression.

Health visitors can play an important part in promoting the health of  hundreds of thousands of families in the years to come – but only if  there are a sufficient number of trained health visitors, with the resources to match”.

Our message to government is: ‘Give us the tools, and we will deliver job’.”

The Unite/CPHVA response to the review will be presented to ministers early in the autumn.
